Dendrobates tinctorius by Brad C.

Characteristics and Good Eats

This animal, in my opinion is very unique because of its brilliant colors to warn off predators. Most species of frogs without poison are very dull and boring. This frog packs a wallop of poisin. It has enough poisin to be lethal to ten humans. The average life span of a frog like this is 10-15 years. But the record is a frog who lived to be 20.5 years of age. He must have been the smartest frog of his age. The size of this animal can reach up to 60mm but the average is about 40mm to 50mm.

What do these things eat? You think they would have a hard time finding food, they do. But they eat termites and ants. It is hard for these frogs to eat as they sometimes have to forge for there food and they are more venerable to prey. But as I said before the colors give it away that these little things are poisonous.

Habitat and Reproduction

Where do these colorful little creatures live? Well i'm glad you asked, they live in humid, wet locations. You know rain forest floors, locations such as Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana and Brazil.

This subject is always sort of shunted aside, and you think that "why couldn’t everything just sort of pop out of the ground" but that's not how it works. These frogs reproduce by the females laying her eggs on the ground. The male then spreads his "fertilizer" over the eggs. As soon as these frogs are hatched the male carries the tadpoles to the water. These little brothers and sisters are very aggressive and will eat just about anything they can get there hand....... sticky pads on.

If I were a posin dart frog

If i were a posin dart frog the one thing I would do if I saw a human, I would jump on there face and freak them out. It would be so awsome.

Current research is directed at understanding the degree of genetic isolation of populations by estimating interpopulation geneflow. Sampling to date has been conducted throughout Suriname and French Guiana and includes 20+ localities. Sampling from tinctorius' limited range in Guyana is from a single collection in the Acarai Mts. by Waldyke Prince.

Preliminary results based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences indicate significant genetic structure and surprising relationships between populations. Further studies, using microsatellite markers will elucidate the extent of structuring and gene flow between these populations.

A.K.A. I have no idea how to refrase this.....?
